“Why is all giraffes gay?” asks the most inquisitive Ali G.
The shocked and very unhip Professor James Hanken of Harvard University stutters “Who says they are?”

Replies the ever logical Ali G, “…Well they look it.”

Born in “da heart of da Staines ghetto,” just southwest of London, Ali G is an “intraviewer” extraordinaire. (You can recognize him as a ghetto child because he consistently drops the letter “H”). Sporting only the latest FUBU and Enyce, accentuated by large pieces of bling-blinging jewelry, Ali G takes on the world in his interviews. Victims include Admiral Stansfield Turner, former head of the CIA, Maurice Gross, Britain’s leading ghost specialist, and a woman whose cinematic career has turned heads over and over, porn star Jenna Jameson. Ali G’s ambitions don’t end there, however. He is also the leader of the feared gang, Da West Staines Massive. This eight man group is constantly on the prowl, always keeping one eye on their turf, which begins at the Bumblebee’s Day Nursery, and the other eye on the lookout for the criminal L.A.P.D. Despite all this activity, Ali G is a loyal and devoted man to his bitch (or lady as she prefers to be called), Julie. Always down for his brothas, Ali G never fails to “keep it real.”

Ali G is the comedic personality of Sacha Baron Cohen. This native Brit is the son of a Welsh father and Israeli mother. A natural comedian, Cohen amused his friends at school by always having a basketball in hand – despite the fact that his school had no basketball team. At 18, Cohen spent a year in Israel at the Rosh Hanikra Kibbutz, learning about his roots. Like many acclaimed artists and actors, Cohen also has an intelligent side. Upon his return from Israel, he finished his education and wrote a much commended paper on Black and Jewish peoples and the difficulties these minorities face.

Upon graduation, Cohen committed himself to the life of a struggling artist. His love of comedy landed him a role on “The 11 O’Clock Show”, a satire of late night news. It was here that Ali G was born. Cohen won the Best Newcomer Award in the 1999 British Comedy Awards, and a year later “Da Ali G Show” had a time slot of its own.

Ali G now has his own show and has even put forth a feature film. Infamous throughout Europe, Ali G stepped into the American scene with a cameo appearance as the driver in Madonna’s “Music” video. “Da Ali G Show” is now accessible to us Yanks through HBO. The days and times are variable but it generally shows between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. If these hours are as preposterous to you as they are to me, I suggest downloading. You won’t regret it.

Respect and keep it real.
